BREEAM Version 7 is here – Setting a bold new benchmark for sustainable construction.
In our latest technical bulletin Sustainability Engineer Mune Abdalla looks at the latest BREEAM update and what it means for sustainable construction.
Going beyond operational energy, V7 now tackles whole-life carbon, assessing materials, construction, building services, and end-of-life impacts. It also raises the bar on biodiversity, climate resilience, and occupant wellbeing, while aligning more closely with global frameworks like the EU Taxonomy and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Compared to earlier manuals, V7 is more performance-driven and data-focused, offering clearer insights for investors, designers, and building users.
Project registration for BREEAM NC V7 opens on 30 September 2025, followed by a three-month transition period where projects may still register under the previous version. After this, all new projects will be required to register under V7, marking a full shift to the updated standard.
Supporting this transition is the enhanced BREEAM Projects portal, a central hub where assessors and project teams can register projects, submit evidence, track QA feedback, and access the latest tools. This digital platform ensures a smoother, more transparent certification process, helping projects meet the ambitious new standards with confidence.
