To celebrate International Women’s Day, the ladies at Bennett Freehill went out to lunch to discuss their career journeys so far and highlight some of the barriers that they faced from education into industry.
Building Services is typically considered a male dominated industry, so it was refreshing to look at how far things have come in terms of representation and breaking the stigma while acknowledging the gender disparity that still exists in STEM roles.
One of our female engineers, Shannon Molloy, who has been with us for 2 years, expressed how she didn’t know about the building services industry while in school, or even the right subjects to study for engineering, and that opportunities in STEM weren’t always advocated in careers departments.
Bennett Freehill will continue to commit to delivering female led STEM talks in local schools to inspire and provide information about the industry and answer questions from personal experience.
